Updated By UnchainedTV News Desk – Los Angeles, Ca., December 24th, 2025 – Animal rescuer Zoe Rosenberg  was released from jail on the morning of December 24th, Christmas Eve, after officials approved her request to serve the final 60 days of her 90-day sentence on house arrest instead of behind bars. Her early release is also being granted under California’s half-time credits for good behavior, according to supporters closely monitoring her case.

Rosenberg, a member of Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), was convicted for rescuing four chickens from a Perdue slaughterhouse, an act her supporters describe as an urgent effort to save sick and suffering animals facing imminent death. Her incarceration sparked widespread outrage, with advocates arguing that the legal system is criminalizing compassion while shielding industrial animal agriculture from scrutiny.

DxE Lead Organizer Almira Tanner announced Rosenberg’s release by noting that the incarceration of the young activist did not appear to deter others from rescuing animals, as authorities might have hoped, but actually spurred a flurry of additional rescues. “Across the world, we honored Zoe’s incarceration with action, rescuing animals every single day she spent behind barsTwo quailsfour groups of chickens, and a rabbit from slaughterhouses, mice from a laboratory, injured raccoons, a fish and a rat from a ‘pet’ store, rabbits from a hoarding situation, baby chicks from a feed store, and turkeys from a factory farm. 14 rescues, totaling 163 individuals, in 14 days.”

Moby joined hundreds of Rosenberg’s supporters who marched in Los Angeles, during her incarceration. There were also marches in San Francisco and elsewhere. The marches were organized by DxE, the group at the forefront of the “open rescue” movement, which openly rescues animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses, videotaping the actions and releasing the footage to the public, arguing the actions are necessary and morally correct.

Zoe Faced Health Risks While Behind Bars

Public concern had intensified due to serious health risks Rosenberg faced while incarcerated. She suffers from Type 1 diabetes, requiring reliable access to glucose to treat dangerous blood sugar lows. Supporters say that access had been limited in jail, placing her at medical risk. She also lives with gastroparesis, a condition that partially paralyzes the stomach, making it difficult or impossible to digest standard jail food. As a result, she had reportedly been left feeling ill and weakened while in jail.

Despite these conditions, Rosenberg has continued to center animals in her thoughts and actions. During her time in jail, she shared words of resolve and encouragement, reminding supporters that the fight for animals must continue even in the face of personal hardship. A short video featuring Zoe’s words from jail was released publicly.

While her release brings relief, house arrest conditions will be highly restrictive. Rosenberg will not be allowed to have visitors of any kind—no friends or family may enter her apartment. She will be permitted to leave home for only two hours per week, strictly for grocery shopping.

Advocates say the sweeping solidarity around Rosenberg is already having an effect—shining a light on what they describe as the injustice of jailing someone for rescuing suffering animals and helping build public support for legal protections that defend animals rather than punishing those who act to save them.
