Canoga Park, CA – June 18, 2026 – A family’s celebration of the New York Knicks’ first NBA championship in more than 50 years ended in tragedy when Los Angeles police officers fatally shot their dog, Jameson, outside their Canoga Park apartment on June 13th. Now, newly released body-camera footage has intensified scrutiny of the shooting and prompted renewed questions about the use of force against companion animals. Many animal lovers are expressing outrage over how the encounter was handled by police.

“I ain’t gettin’ bit by that, bro.”

The Los Angeles Police Department released bodycam footage this week showing the moments leading up to the shooting. “I ain’t gettin’ bit by that, bro,” one of the officers is heard saying on video.  KTLA says that is the officer who later shoots the dog dead.  While LAPD maintains that an officer acted in response to a perceived threat, the video has fueled public debate and drawn criticism from elected officials, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

“What I saw on the bodycam footage is disturbing and tragic,” Bass said in a statement released after reviewing the video. “The Chief and I agreed that it was important to release the bodycam footage swiftly. While the investigation is ongoing, I am very concerned about why shots were fired and Jameson was killed. This shooting makes clear that while LAPD provides officers with written guidance on the use of force and pets, this is not enough.”

The LA mayor’s comments suggest current policies and training do not adequately prepare officers for encounters involving animals. The shooting remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division.

Jameson, a two-year-old doodle mix described by his family as affectionate and friendly, was wearing a Knicks jersey when officers arrived at the condominium complex. According to reports, police were responding to a call regarding a screaming woman.

Family members say the screams were not distress calls.

They were celebrating the Knicks’ championship victory.

Video recorded immediately after the shooting spread across social media and news outlets, showing Jameson’s guardian, Marie Marseille, crying over her dog’s body while officers stood nearby. The footage drew millions of views and became a focal point of public anger surrounding the case.

According to LAPD, officers encountered a barking dog when Marseille initially opened her apartment door. Police say they instructed her to secure the animal. Department officials allege that when the door was reopened, Jameson exited the apartment and moved toward an officer, prompting the shooting.

The family disputes that account.

Marseille and relatives have publicly stated that Jameson was not aggressive and posed no threat. They contend that the shooting occurred almost immediately after he emerged from the apartment suggesting lethal force was not necessary.

The release of body-camera footage has shifted public attention from demands for transparency to debate over what the video shows. Supporters of the family argue the footage raises additional concerns about the officer’s decision to use deadly force, while police officials maintain that the shooting occurred during a rapidly unfolding encounter.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman have both publicly supported transparency surrounding the investigation. Bass and Raman are currently in a fierce contest for the mayor’s office. Bass is the first incumbent to face a runoff since 2005. Now, the shooting of this dog by police has become a hot political issue.

The case has resonated far beyond Los Angeles. A fundraiser launched following the shooting quickly attracted widespread support from people moved by the family’s loss and seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding Jameson’s death.

For many, the incident has become about more than a single tragic encounter. Companion animals are increasingly recognized as members of the family, and Jameson’s death has renewed debate over how law enforcement agencies handle interactions with animals and whether officers receive adequate training to de-escalate encounters involving dogs before resorting to lethal force.

What remains undisputed is that a family celebrating a historic sports victory lost a beloved companion within minutes of police arriving at their home.

To those grieving Jameson, the case is not an abstract policy debate. It is the sudden death of an animal they loved in a moment that was supposed to be joyful.

Whether the ongoing investigation ultimately supports the police account, the family’s account, or reveals something more complicated, the release of body-camera footage has transformed the case from a local tragedy into a national conversation about accountability, transparency, and the treatment of animals during police encounters.
