Christianity and Animals: Questions Raised by the film: What Would Jesus Do?

Los Angeles, California – March 8th, 2026 – Be kind to others… does that apply only to people? How do religions approach compassion for animals? Let’s examine  Christianity and animals – and the growing conversation around faith, stewardship, and cruelty-free living.

Curious about how this topic has been explored before, I began digging through older footage on UNCHAINEDTV and came across an interview conducted by Jane Velez-Mitchell with filmmaker Kip Andersen. Andersen, known for documentaries such as Cowspiracy and Seaspiracy, was discussing a project that, at the time, was titled Christspiracy.

Since that interview was recorded, the film has undergone an important change. The documentary has been rebranded as: What Would Jesus Do? (WWJD). The film explores the relationship between Christian teachings and the treatment of animals, asking a provocative question that many viewers may find both challenging and thought-provoking: How would Jesus approach the act of killing animals for food?

A Conversation with Filmmaker Kip Andersen

The discussion highlights a topic that has been quietly gaining attention in recent years: the intersection of Christianity and animals, and whether the values of compassion and mercy – often associated with Christian teachings – might influence how believers think about animal consumption. During the interview, Andersen explains that working on the documentary led him to explore religious history more deeply. The research process pushed him to examine how interpretations of scripture have evolved over time and how cultural traditions have shaped modern understandings of faith, morality, and humanity’s relationship with animals.

While the documentary focuses primarily on Christianity, the ethical questions it raises extend far beyond a single religious tradition. Viewers from many backgrounds—including people who identify with other religions or none at all—may find themselves reflecting on how compassion and moral responsibility intersect with everyday choices.

Velez-Mitchell also notes during the conversation that the documentary is the kind of film that reveals new insights each time it is watched. Like many thoughtful documentaries, it invites viewers to revisit familiar ideas from new perspectives and reconsider assumptions that may have gone unexamined.

For those who have not yet seen the film, watching the interview can offer useful context. The conversation introduces the central questions explored in the documentary and provides insight into the motivations behind Andersen’s investigation into faith, ethics, and the treatment of animals.

When the film premiered in Los Angeles—while it was still known as Christspiracy— UNCHAINEDTV was there to cover the event and speak with attendees about the powerful ethical questions the documentary raises.

The Premiere of Christspiracy, Now What Would Jesus Do?

The premiere coverage captures reactions from people attending the event and reflects the growing interest in discussions surrounding Christianity and animals. For many viewers, the film’s central question—how religious teachings intersect with compassion toward animals—opens the door to broader conversations about ethics, spirituality, and everyday choices.  Whether one approaches the topic from a place of faith, philosophy, or simple curiosity, the discussion surrounding What Would Jesus Do? invites deeper reflection about how spiritual traditions shape our understanding of compassion and responsibility toward other living beings.

What WOULD Jesus Do?

How would Jesus respond to today’s systems of industrialized animal agriculture, where hundreds of thousands of animals are confined in giant warehouses called factory farms and concentrated animal feeding operations? How would Jesus react to the reality of more than 80 billion land animals killed every year for food? And, while we’re asking questions, why was Jesus so upset when he was inside the temple in Jerusalem? Was it just the money changers… or something else? What were those merchants selling? Find out by watching the movie.

Next Up

The conversation about religion and compassion extends far beyond Christianity. In the next installment of this series, we’ll turn our attention to a thought-provoking documentary that travels across faith traditions and asks whether humanity’s spiritual teachings might hold unexpected insights about our relationship with animals.
