Gene Baur’s journey began in the mid-1980s when he started traveling across the United States, documenting the abuses of industrialized factory farming. His undercover investigations and heart-wrenching photographs have shed light on the grim realities of our food system, sparking national and international awareness. Baur’s work has not only exposed cruelty but also inspired a global sanctuary movement dedicated to rescuing and advocating for farm animals.

Baur’s dedication is evident in his testimony before legislative bodies and his role in the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard. His advocacy has been instrumental in enacting laws that aim to diminish  cruel farming practices, although industrialized animal agriculture’s routine practices, like tail-docking, extreme confinement and – of course – slaughter, are inescapably cruel. His efforts have been covered extensively by major media outlets, further amplifying the message of compassion and change.

In the following video, Baur talks about the true essence of what makes a happy home for animals:

Founded in 1986, Farm Sanctuary began with a simple yet profound mission: to document and rescue animals left for dead in the food system. Today, it operates sanctuaries in New York and California, where animals are treated as friends, not food. Visitors are encouraged to meet these animals, each with unique personalities and stories, fostering a deeper understanding and empathy towards all living beings.

Gene Baur reflected on Farm Sanctuary’s extraordinary growth and its impact: “We now operate sanctuaries where animals get to enjoy their lives, and people get to visit them, recognizing that they are not that different from cats or dogs. that they have feelings, they have memories, they have personalities. They want to be treated with kindness, just like any other animal, or even human for that matter.”

Farm Sanctuary’s mission extends beyond rescue. The organization actively engages in educational outreach, visiting schools, and advocating for a vegan lifestyle. By promoting awareness of the benefits of veganism and exposing the cruelty and inefficiencies of animal agriculture, Farm Sanctuary aims to shift resources towards a more humane and sustainable food system and away from animal agriculture.

Baur emphasizes the importance of grassroots efforts, local activism and, most of all, mindful consumer choices. “We vote with our dollars,” he says, urging people to support plant-based products, vegan restaurants and local farmers. He also highlights the significance of incremental change, celebrating every small step towards a more compassionate world.

“I try to dwell on the things that I can do, instead of being upset with the things that I can’t do.” — Gene Baur, Farm Sanctuary
