LA Red Carpet Premiere for Kale Krew, UnchainedTV’s series on Chicago’s vegan scene
Hollywood, Ca. August, 29th, 2024 – Al Capone was likely turning in his grave as more than a hundred vegan social media influencers, content creators and activists converged on a Los Angeles red carpet premiere party to celebrate Kale Krew, the new hit TV series that showcases Chicago’s vegan scene. Emmy winning host/actress/bestselling author Tabitha Brown wowed the crowd at PETA’s James Cromwell Empathy Center as she hugged and congratulated the stars of the UnchainedTV Original Series, Chicago restaurateur Nemanja Golubovic and influencer Tamika Price. Fedoras abounded as the assembled guests dressed as “Hollywood meets Chicagoland.” There was lots of voguing under the media lights as every partygoer gave the theme their own unique twist.
Yes, who knew? The Windy City turns out to be a vegan Mecca. This fascinating fact is revealed and then celebrated in every frame of every episode of Kale Krew, now streaming for free on UnchainedTV. Nemanja and Tamika take a lighthearted, and often comedic, approach as they sweep into one Chicago vegan restaurant after another, taking over the kitchen and commanding the chefs to make their most popular dishes. Sometimes Tamika even grabs the spatula and helps make the “sauwse,” which she pronounces with a distinctly Chicago-style twang. These two tantalizing taste testers are adorable together and have that magical, mystical quality casting directors long for… chemistry. Says Nemanja, “Everybody is asking us, how do you create such an amazing chemistry? Well, chemistry is not something you can create. It just happens naturally.”
It’s a Tantalizing Adventure
From deep dish pizza to soft serve ice cream, from Asian gourmet to all-American fast food, Chicago’s dining scene offers a delicious vegan version for every imaginable dish. And, it’s so fun to learn the backstory of these restaurants. In several cases, the restaurant owner was in the family food business, went vegan, and then decided to reinvent the business without any meat, dairy or eggs. For almost all of these chefs and entrepreneurs, showcasing the joys of plant-based food is a passion and their life’s work. Every restaurant’s “about us” is fascinating, which makes every episode compelling.
Take Episode 8 about Soul Veg City. It’s Chicago’s oldest plant-based restaurant. Back when it started in 1981, few even knew what the word vegan meant! Considered the Original Soul Vegetarian, it’s been a landmark on the famous South Side of Chicago for over 40 years. The brother and sister team that run the restaurant credit their father for bringing healthy, vegan food to Chicago. Their dad, famously known as Prince Asiel Ben Israel, was part of the African-Hebrew Israelite community.
Then there’s the vegan ice cream episode. One of the soft serve shop’s owners grew up working in her family’s ice cream parlor. She went vegan and decided to start a a vegan version of the family business, which she named Runaway Cow.

Famed wellness guru Koya Webb was swinging to the beat, as the (vegan, of course) DJ got the assembled crowd line-dancing to some thumping funk. “This is not a life of deprivation,” explained Plant-Based Tamika, as the Kale Krew star is known, adding, “I am living my best life by being vegan.”
As for the up and coming network, UnchainedTV President Jane Velez-Mitchell encouraged the partygoers to think of their own shows. “UnchainedTV belongs to all of you,” she exclaimed.
