Animal activists are mobilizing to help LA Fire Victims, their pets and surrounding wildlife with rescue, shelter and plant-based food.

January 11th, Los Angeles, CA. – In the wake of the massively destructive and emotionally shattering fires that have swept across large swaths of Los Angeles, leading animal activists converged on zoom this week to map out plans to help people, their pets and the region’s wildlife. The challenges are monumental.

In many cases, rescuers are being blocked off from entering the devastated neighborhoods where animals are trapped in houses and apartments or roaming the burnt-out streets. And, even when the animals are rescued, the challenge becomes finding the transport vehicles to remove them, getting those transport vehicles into the evacuated areas and, then, finding institutions, shelters and private homes to take them in. A zoom conference was held this week to try and overcome all those challenges and help the many animals and people in crisis in the wake of this unprecedented calamity.

Also joining was NYPD Blue actor and animal rescuer Billy McNamara who has been interviewed by many TV networks for repeatedly risking his life to rescue numerous animals in and around Pacific Palisades, an upscale community north of Santa Monica, which looks like it’s been bombed, with most of the homes leveled by fire. McNamara made a point of saying, while he rescued dogs and cats, he also went out of his way to help rescue chickens, pigs, goats and other farmed animals.

Pasadena Humane has also been inundated with the arrival of more than 400 dogs, some suffering burns, as you can see in the photo provided by the organization.ย  On its website, Pasadena Humane declared, “We are desperately in need of monetary donations to help us purchase medical supplies and other resources as we start to see a significant increase in the number of burned and injured animals coming to our shelter. These animals are suffering from smoke inhalation, singed paws, burns, dehydration, and more. We have been treating each animal based on their needs, providing fluids, oxygen, pain medications and wound care as quickly as we can.”

Other organizations, including a coalition of the Los Angeles chapters of The Save Movement, Plant Based Treaty and Animal Alliance Network, are racing to get plant-based foods to first responders, like firefighters as well as displaced homeowners and renters, many of whom were forced to flee with only their pets. They are also distributing plant-based dog food, donated by V-Dog vegan dog food company. Says Ellen Dent, of the Plant Based Treaty LA team, “A lot of the evacuation centers don’t have plant-based options or have very sparse offerings. So, it’s important to have plant-based food available for humans and other animals who have lost so much as a result of these horrific fires.”

The Plant Based Treaty team makes the connection between the fires, worsened by climate change and our government’s broken food system that subsidizes animal agriculture, which is a leading cause of climate change that is often overlooked. “If you are upset by the LA fires, now is the time to look at your diet and make it more sustainable by going plant-based. That’s how we can do our part to avoid the next catastrophe.” Here is how you can donate via Venmo and Zelle.

On Saturday, January 11th, as shifting winds continued to create waves of panic across LA, volunteers came together for a heartfelt initiative to support those impacted.ย  The โ€œAll Hands On Deck,โ€ event was a collaboration with Beryl Foundation and Chef Supreme’s Harvest Academy Club, focusing on assembling plant-based meals for displaced families and first responders. Organized by actor and attorney Shaka Smith, the group prepared nutritious dishes served as packaged meals. Dozens worked tirelessly to ensure that no one affected by the fires goes hungry. The event highlighted the strength of community and the power of collective action, serving as a testament to the compassion of Angelinos in times of need.

Support + Feed, run by artist/activist Maggie Baird, is also moving to provide plant-based options to those in need, something that her organization is famous for providing year round. Go Dharmic is also on the ground providing plant-based food donated by The Vegan Joint to those in need at a Los Angeles church, the Vintage Faith Foursquare Church.

The organization Animal Victory is helping to provide food, supplies, rescue, and veterinarian care for animals, reporting, “Our friends in Mojave, CA are working hard. They have rescued 44 homeless horses, transported them on trailers to Hansen Dam Equestrian Center, Los Angeles Equestrian Center, and Pomona Fairgrounds. Funds are desperately needed. Owners left with their horse and a saddle while their structures burned down.”

LA County Care & Control is pleading with Angelinos to come and adopt the dogs in their care so they can make room for the many incoming animals who have nowhere else to go. Here is a link to some truly adorable dogs.

Animal Wellness Foundation has taken in many dozens of dogs, saying, “We are filling our empty old vet hospital in Marina del Rey (our new facility is across the street) with any animals that needed to be evacuated but couldnโ€™t go with their pet parent.” They do need donations for the care and feeding of these animals. Chief medical officer, veterinarian Dr. Annie Harvilicz, is in charge of the facility and has been operating on very little sleep for days.ย ย

There are many other organizations also mobilizing to help animals during this truly apocalyptic tragedy. While we can’t list them all, we hope you do donate to the ones that speak to you. Los Angeles, America’s second largest city, and home to some of the nation’s most iconic locales, has never seen anything like this level of destruction. Let’s hope it brings out the best in all of us.
