This landmark decision comes after years of criticism over the treatment of marine animals, including the orca Lolita, who died in captivity last year.

Tokitae the orca, also known as Lolita, died in the world’s smallest orca tank at the Miami Seaquarium after spending more than 50 years in captivity Los Angeles, August 20th, 2023— The orca Tokitae, named Lolita by her jailers, died on Friday, August 18th, 2023, in the world’s smallest orca tank at the Miami Seaquarium, in Florida, after having spent more than 50 years captive there.

Miami Seaquarium Agrees to Release Tokitae, the Oldest Orca in Captivity

After decades of campaigning, plans have been set up to release Tokitae, the captive orca also known as Lolita, from Miami Seaquarium Los Angeles, March 6, 2023 — The Miami Seaquarium has announced the signing of a formal and binding agreement with a group called the Friends of Toki to begin the process of returning Tokitae the Orca, named Lolita by the aquarium, to a marine enclosure in Puget Sound in Washington state — close to where she was violently abducted from the ocean more than 50 years ago.

In honor of ‘Empty The Tanks Worldwide’, demonstrators hold very moving rally in a downtown Portland square to raise awareness of Lolita’s plight and to do a major ‘Empty the Tanks’ banner signing to send to Seaquarium.

‘Empty The Tanks Worldwide’ shows support for the Lumni Totem Pole ceremony honoring Tokatae, the whale taken from the Puget Sound 50 years ago and put into captivity in a sea aquarium. The Seaquarium renamed her ‘Lolita’. According to the Lummi Nation, and others, in 1970, over 40 orca were brutally captured from the Salish Sea in northwest Washington and taken to marine parks around the world.
