Soy Freely: Alleviating fears and shooting down the “bro science” about this therapeutic plant protein

Perhaps one of the most misunderstood and maligned plant proteins is soy. I hear it in the locker room all the time. Men are refusing to eat soy in any form because they fear growing breasts or limit their intake of soy milk, tofu, edamame and tempeh thinking they need to restrict their “consumption of estrogen.” Women fear that soy products will mess with their hormone balance, thinking that it may lead to breast cancer.

Maintaining your weight while “walking slowly” into a plant-based diet

Making a major lifestyle change like ditching dairy and adopting a plant-based diet can be a challenging process. In last month’s column, I wrote about two hockey players who tried unsuccessfully to go vegan. The male athlete gave up because he felt ravenously hungry all the time while the female athlete gained weight.

How to maintain your weight when switching to a plant-based diet

When I’m at the rink, people know that I’m a vegan hockey player and many approach to ask what I eat and drink while training and recovering. A couple players–one male and one female–tried ditching dairy and eating vegan but encountered unexpected results that led to abandoning their diet change.

The Three Omegas

Lacing up my skates in the locker room, I’m asked questions daily about how I eat, what I drink on the ice, and how I recover. The guys know that I am vegan, that I take meticulous care of my body when it comes to conditioning and recovery, and that I am knowledgeable about nutrition.

Plant strong: Cycling through protein myths

One of the most famous cycling coaches in the world – the coach who literally wrote the bible for cyclists – was in town for a weekend seminar that I was attending. Prior to the Sunday session, we got to ride together.

They’re misleading you: vitamin D is not a vitamin

It’s spring in all its magnificent splendor, which means it’s time to get outside to soak up all that vitamin D that you missed during the winter months. One of the downsides of my return to life as a hockey player instead of as a cyclist is that by being a rink rat, I don’t get enough vitamin D the natural way by being outside in the sunshine 2-6 hours per day.
