Los Angeles, September 6th, 2024 —LA Climate Week, running from September 8th to September 15th, is a groundbreaking event featuring more than 100 organizations and more than 100 events across 20 venues in Los Angeles. The week promises to bring together diverse communities with a shared goal: to combat climate change and push for climate justice. From art exhibits and vegan fashion shows to beach marches and film screenings, LA Climate Week, the first ever organized in America’s second largest city, is fostering conversations around sustainable solutions. To their credit, the organizers are acknowledging and even highlighting the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle when it comes to combating climate change. This, in itself, is a breakthrough and may well inspire other environmental organizations to embrace this often missing piece of the sustainability puzzle. UnchainedTV, a media partner of the event, alongside the Plant-Based Treaty, a strategic partner and one of the key organizations holding events, aims to inspire meaningful changes in how we address the climate crisis. UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell interviewed JC Arce and Lara Rudar, two of LA Climate Week’s lead organizers, along with Samantha Lau of the Plant Based Treaty. While tackling the enormous threat posed by fossil fuels, LA Climate Week is also showcasing plant-based living as a key strategy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable practices. Research from Oxford University indicates that a vegan diet can result in 75% fewer greenhouse gases than a high meat-based diet typical of Americans. LA Climate Week events, such as the Plant-Based Treaty’s climate march in Santa Monica, will highlight the urgent need for dietary changes as part of the broader fight for climate justice.

JC Arce, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the Collidescope Foundation, and a key organizer of LA Climate Week, said, “LA has so many amazing organizations and so many amazing impact leaders that work in climate, but they’re not talking to each other. Frankly, there’s a lot of opportunities, a lot of resource capital in LA that can be used to mobilize real solutions to address this climate issue now.”

Samantha Lau, one of the Plant Based Treaty’s key organizers and a passionate advocate for plant-based diets, explains: ” A plant-based food system can absolutely fight climate change. The animal agriculture industry is very devastating and is causing a lot of havoc on our planet. We have this opportunity to let everyone know, to get everybody involved who’s involved in LA Climate Week, of the importance of having a plant-based food system to fight climate change.”

Attendees of LA Climate Week can expect a wide variety of events that cater to all ages and interests. The week opens with a star-studded ceremony at the House of Cocotte, featuring speeches from local leaders and environmental changemakers. The closing ceremony on September 15th will be an opportunity to reflect on the week’s impact, with musical performances and exhibitions highlighting the importance of climate action.

Throughout the week, attendees can enjoy plant-based food options from vegan food trucks, attend climate town halls, and witness a sustainable fashion show that emphasizes ethical alternatives to leather, fur, silk, wool, and other harmful materials. These events not only celebrate climate solutions but also demonstrate the growing momentum behind the movement for compassionate, modern alternatives in fashion and food.

With the world on the brink of five catastrophic climate tipping points, LA Climate Week is more than just a series of events—it’s a call to action. Organizers, including JC Arce and Lara Rudar, have created this week to galvanize Los Angeles, one of the most influential cities in the world where trends often begin, and turn The City of Angels into a global leader in the fight against climate change.
