JaneUnChained cameras were there for a loud, confrontation filled, demonstration at the New York Blood Center’s offices on Manhattan’s East Side. The uproar follows a widely condemned decision by the New York Blood Center to stop paying for the care and feeding of 66 chimpanzees, part of a colony of chimps it used for biomedical research for 30 years. The chimps are languishing on islands in Liberia unable to care for themselves. Demonstrators, led by documentary filmmaker and Their Turn journalist Donny Moss, refused to leave the lobby of the NYBC Thursday, June 18th, accusing the NYBC of cruelty.

The New York Times reports that an expert sent to check on the chimps found them “without water,” noting there is “no fresh water on the islands and the water system had broken down.” The Humane Society of the United States has stepped in with money for food and repairs and the caretakers are working for free for the time being. The NYBC refused to offer JaneUnChained a statement despite numerous requests made on camera. The demonstrators say their campaign is just starting.
