New York, August 3rd, 2024 –  UnchainedTV took a tour of the Plant Based World Expo at the Javits Convention Center in New York. The tour guide? The incomparable Charlise Rookwood, founder of Vegan Soulicious. The chef and social media influencer uncovered the stories behind some of the most innovative vegan products on the market.
As we entered the convention center, the bustling atmosphere of the Plant Based World Expo was electric. Thousands of attendees were bursting with excitement and curiosity, exploring the hundreds of  booths showcasing a plethora of plant-based delights. New food brands often make their debut at this Expo.
VFC Not KFC
One of the standout stops was at VFC Foods, where we indulged in vegan fried chick*n, a creation coated in cornflakes that had our taste buds dancing. The texture and flavor were so compelling that it was hard to believe it was entirely plant-based.
Another highlight was the assortment of cheeses from Miyoko’s Creamery, featuring their Aged Smoked Gouda, Classic Chive, and Herbs De Provence. Each variety offered a unique taste experience, with the Classic Chive being a particular favorite. These vegan
cheeses, paired with apricot, transported us to a realm of culinary bliss.
Stories of Passion and Heritage
Among the exhibitors, Shicken, founded by Satvinder and Parm Bains, was a standout brand born during the lockdown, driven by a passion for authentic flavors and home-cooked recipes. Satvinder shared her journey of developing a range of products inspired by her family’s recipes handed down through generations. Their vegan “chicken,” infused with these traditional flavors, resonated deeply with us, reflecting a beautiful blend of cultural heritage and modern innovation.
Satvinder’s story is a testament to the emotional and personal connections that many of the exhibitors bring to their products. “I’m from East London, so this is a very emotional moment for me,” Charlise shared before trying her first bite. “I grew up on these flavors. It’s incredible to see them come to life in a new form.”
Temptation…
The expo also introduced us to Temptation, an oat milk-based soft serve that comes in a convenient powder form. The simplicity of mixing it with water to create a delicious dessert was mind-blowing. The taste, rich and creamy, left a lasting impression, proving that plant-based alternatives can compete with traditional dairy products.
Outstanding Foods, known for their chips, showcased their new products like cheese balls in flavors such as Bacon Cheddar, Jalapeño Cheddar, Garlic Parmesan, and Hella Hot, all completely animal-free, despite their names. Their Salt and Vinegar flavor, a nod to British favorites, was a crowd-pleaser.
A Transformative Experience
The Plant Based World Expo isn’t just about tasting incredible food; it’s about witnessing a movement that is transforming how we perceive and consume food. Each product and story highlighted at the expo reflects a broader shift towards sustainability, health, and compassion.
As we wrapped up our visit, the overwhelming sense of innovation and community left us inspired. The expo showcased not just the future of food but a revolution in how we connect with what we eat.
