Animal Welfare Bills Hit California Legislature! You Can Help Pass Them!

Read about all the proposed legislation you can help turn into law, all sponsored by SocialCompassionInLegislation.org
AB 3159’s hearing has been postponed but will be rescheduled. So read up on it!
AB 3159 will require that poultry shackled prior to slaughter are rendered unconscious to ensure that they do not experience unnecessary pain. Other animals have this right, and poultry animals deserve it too. Whether people eat these animals are not, they can all agree they do not need to be tortured prior to their death. By removing the current exemption from humane slaughter practices for poultry, AB 3159 will extend existing humane slaughter rules for livestock to poultry, creating parity throughout the industry and positioning California as a leader in humane slaughter practices nationwide.

SB 1138, Plant Based Meals, would require California health facilities and prisons to make available wholesome, plant-based meals that meet the needs of patients and inmates.  Plant-based meals, containing the healthiest possible foods, are mostly unavailable to inmates. Vegetarian meals are required to be provided upon request of an inmate with any religious, personal, or ethical dietary need, but often times, these meals are not strictly plant based and contain milk or egg products. Requiring plant-based meals to be served in licensed California health care facilities and state prisons will help address cancer prevention and provide an example of healthful eating to the general public. Inmates are required to be provided with sufficient plain and wholesome food of such variety as may be most conducive to good health.

This bad bill would:

  • Unnecessarily extend the timeline for the phaseout of cages, leaving millions of animals to continue to suffer.
  • Not provide a single protection for caged mother pigs and calves used for veal.
  • Create a huge loophole for “research,” which would allow a factory farming corporation to continue to use cages by claiming it was doing research on various production methods.

Factory farmers are desperate to pass this subversive bill. Their hope is that they’re appearing proactive on animal welfare when in reality they’re attempting to fend off future efforts to abolish these practices. For the animals, we can’t let this bill pass!

Breaking news from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).  This past week IARC published the long awaited Monograph on Red Meat and Processed Meat.  IARC has been studying the cancer effects since 2015 after the World Health Organization report classified processed meat-including pepperoni, ham, and sausage made from pork, beef, or poultry-as a Group 1 carcinogen.  The monograph is the outcome of IARC’s extensive scientific study. Click image above to access the report.

SCR 100 would urge the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) to comply with Proposition 65 and warn individuals of their potential exposure to this harmful substance by amending California Code of Regulations, title 27, section 27001(b) to add “processed meat (consumption of)” to the list of “chemicals known to the state to cause cancer.” Californians have the right to know what they are eating can cause cancer.  They can then make their choice whether to continue eating it or not, but at least they will have the information to make their choice.

Getting legislation passed is by its very nature a political and complicated process. The legislative process requires meeting directly with elected officials to ask them to author, support, and vote on a particular piece of legislation. IRS rules do not allow any funds used directly for “lobbying” to be tax deductible. That is why when you donate to SCIL, our 501(c)(4), your donation is not eligible as a tax deduction.

Thank you.  We appreciate your ongoing support and donations, and will put them towards our life saving bills!
