WHAT IS CLEAN SOUTH FOODS?

We wanted to know more about the journey and adventures that went into creating Clean South foods.  This is what Daniel had to say…

“We started Clean South in 2015 when we debuted at our first Vegan Food Festival using $3000 we had saved to pay for our wedding. It was nerve-wracking but we believed in our product…luckily so did our first customers! We made back our investment plus more in time to cover our wedding expenses and enjoy two of the best days of our lives (our wedding and the first-ever Vegan Street Fair).

But our story goes back even further, back to 2003 when we were high school seniors learning about the world and trying to understand what would become our place in it. Jessica ate little meat and had a natural predilection toward a vegetarian culture that was piqued through information pamphlets at music shows and festivals like Warped Tour. While on summer vacation, Jessica shared with Daniel books like John Robbins’ Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution. After reading these books and learning about the harmful impact of the meat and dairy industry on our health, our planet and animals, we decided to try one month without meat. When Daniel went on a family vacation that month and survived the buffets and free-flowing food without eating any meat, we decided we could do this long term.

Giving up red meat and pork was easy; it was giving up chicken that was more difficult. Chicken parm, chicken caesar salad, chicken quesadillas, chicken cheesesteaks (this was Philly after all), General Tso’s chicken, and of course…chicken wings. Fast forward to 2005 when we first started making vegan chicken from scratch in college. We were in Boston and there were some vegan comfort food options, but not like there are today. What began as an experiment in our own kitchen grew into an obsession to create satisfying meat alternatives for ourselves and others to enjoy.

If you had told us then we had a future making cruelty-free chicken from plants for a living, we would have been shocked but also impressed and proud. It was a long and winding journey to get here, but it’s an amazing feeling to know we are living in alignment with values we developed as teenagers, that we get to share these values with the world, and we’re making a living doing something our 18-year-old selves would think is pretty cool. Clean South is the culmination of our passion to do what we love every day – to create vegan comfort food so tasty and satisfying that it brings humans joy while doing no harm to our world.

To this day, we encourage taking baby steps and progress over perfection when trying to make a lifestyle change such as eating less meat and dairy. You do not have to be 100% overnight or perfect 100% of the time.  We’d like to encourage our customers to think for themselves and make choices in line with their beliefs while holding ourselves accountable to the same standard in order to stay true to our values outlined above.

Removing meat from your plate for even one meal a day can make a big difference for your health, the health of our planet, and animal suffering. If our Vegan Wings contribute to even an occasional reduction in meat consumption, we’re happy. It’s not realistic that everyone is going to eat plant-based all the time, and we believe each person should find the balance that is right for them, from pure vegan to flexitarian; all we ask is that you have an open mind and understand there are lots of delicious ways to get your protein from plants.

Since 2015, we have worked hard to perfect and grow our take on Vegan Comfort Food through food festivals, farmer’s markets, combo meals in local grocery stores, and finally, by offering the first grab-and-go Vegan Wing on the market, ready to eat right out of the package, hot or cold, and delicious in everything from tacos to salads to pizza and even buffalo chicken cheesesteaks. Our Buffalo Wings and Honee BBQ Wings are available with free shipping from us directly, at specialty markets and natural grocers throughout the US, and online at GTFO and Vegan Essentials. “
