Who Is Detox Dandy?

Rebekah Ortiz is certified in plant-based nutrition and the owner of Detox Dandy, an integrative wellness business in Virginia Beach. She is also the President of Hampton Roads VegFest that works to raise awareness of the Vegan lifestyle through all walks of life through their annual festival and community events.

Her journey began at 12 years old when she befriended a few Friends of the Earth activists on MySpace. They shared about the horrors of industrialized animal agriculture and the benefits of making the switch to veganism. Being Puerto Rican, both environmental sustainability and herbalism ran in her cultural roots so learning about the meat industry’s devastation of ecological communities was a game-changer. Rebekah fully committed to the plant-based vegan lifestyle at 14 years old and has been on an incredible journey to transform lives through self-care and plant-based wellness with her business, Detox Dandy, ever since.

Fast forward just a few years later and she was featured on the cover of Friends of Earth magazine, spoke at the Washington Youth Summit on the environment in DC sponsored by National Geographic, and has helped over 400 individuals transition to the vegan lifestyle through her nationally recognized Overall Health & Wellness Program. Her brand Detox Dandy also organizes large all-vegan festivals, retreats, and wellness events to connect the community with healthy resources while uplifting local holistic and vegan businesses in the process. Follow her on IG and Facebook to learn more.

A Simple Sofrito Recipe That Brings So Much Flavor!

So let’s check out how to make this Sofrito.  Rebekah started off chopping each item into small pieces. She also soaked the Annato seeds in vegetable broth to give them more moisture and extra flavor. She then threw the mixture of seeds, green bell peppers, onions, garlic, and cilantro into the blender and pureed it to a smooth consistency. You can add more vegetable broth or water as needed. This is truly versatile whenever you want to add a touch of Puerto Rican flavor to a dish! And with all those fresh ingredients, you’ll also get a kick of high-powered nutrients with your flavor!  The recipe is below so give it a try.
